Category Selection and Support


Categories in Yext are classifications of a business based on what type of business it is. Although a business may provide hundreds or thousands of products and services, there are usually one or a few categories that best classify it as a certain kind of business. Yext allows you to associate each location with up to 10 categories and to order those categories based on how closely each one describes your business.


In order to maximize search relevance across our publisher sites, the relevant tags and search indexing used by each partner have been 'mapped' to the selectable Yext categories. Mapping enables the categories that best describe each business to translate into optimal search terms on any given publisher site.  Categories are mapped by relevancy. In some cases, publishers have very limited category selection.  Yext will map to the best fitting 'parent' category resulting in a broad categorization on that site. Sites that have more detailed category selections will be mapped as closely as possible.

Some of our publisher sites have a restricted number of categories allowed per listing on their site. Depending on the provided categories, Yext will map to the top selected listings in your account for each partner. See the list below of the accepted number of categories per partner below.
